I've found it's pretty hit or miss, and really have never gotten enough information to determine what causes or prevents timing gear wear.
IME, just take off the valve cover and see how closely you can align the timing marks on the cams. I've had cars with 200k+ on them align perfectly, and other cars with far fewer miles be virtually a full tooth off.
If you have reason to pull the engine, it's strongly worth considering replacing the chain/guides, but if not, I'd just do a visual inspection on the chain and the tensioner...
