did you check tensioner extension yet? Posted by Saabu [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Advice on timing component replacement, Lawrence, Mon, 11 Sep 2006 14:05:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
i just put together an engine with all new chain, guides (but old sprockets) and once the chain was tensioned, the tensioner showed about 5 teeth, or about a centimeter or less of extension.
on the other hand my 87 SPG is showing about 13 teeth, and is almost at the maximum allowable extension, yet the car shows no signs of timing issues....
so, take off the AC compressor and dig out your tensioner to see where the gauge is. And as others said, chain noise can be another indicator. the Valve cover guide is an easy replacement.
by the way the old guides were pretty messed up - one was broken towards the top (the wear surface had chipped off) and the other showed deep grooves.
And i believe there are different levels of quality of guides - you can get cheap hard plastic guides or softer rubber ones. The dealer probably has the better ones, and mail-order stores probably sell the cheaper ones.
