It sounds like you, as most of us here, do most all of your own work. Congratulations! Have you had a factory tune-up done and how long ago? Reason for asking, one of the items most SAAB masters do is to clean the throttle body and butterfly valve. Most of the rest of us don't know about this so we don't.

Consider getting a flashlight, remove the rubber elbow going into the throttle body, and view with the flashlight. You may see a nice shiney brass colored disk but with a dark color all around the edge. If you do a can of carb cleaner is in order. If it looks like that, or even worse, it usually means some of the other passages in the TB are dirty, and that leads to unsettled running.

If it looks like a cleaning is order, spray into the TB, also hold the throttle open and look past the butterfly valve, spray more, get a lint free cloth wrapped around a finger or two and work that stuff loose. Spray liberally and let it sit for about 15 minutes, go back and wipe as much off as possible. Then put the intake back together, start (it may run really wild for a bit) and run. Let cool and repeat the procedure.

Depending upon your abilities you may want to remove the throttle body entirely (but keep the other stuff attached) and clean from the other side of the butterfly valve too. This is a little difficult to get on/off but recommended once every five years or so... My 1987 was fairly dirty and the difference was very satisfying!

Then a preventative light clean when you are doing plugs/airfilter/oil change will keep all of the internals clean and happy.

But since this is a Saab, it could be something else too!
