I'd say make him an offer you are prepared to pay. My wifes 1987 is still able to scoot down the road after the 352k miles on it. It is a california car so no rust etc, and we are the original owners too.
Also, as to the donation status. I know in California, but maybe all states now too it *used* to be you got a write off on *agreed upon* value of the car, as long as it wasn't too outrageous. Since the first of this year that changed and you only get a write off *on the price achieved at auction*. What that means is 1) you don't have a known value when you donate, 2) it's going to be less than it used to be, 3) you'd do better to sell it yourself unless you really need the tax write offs. And if you do need that writes offs that much what are you doing here anyway? kidding.
If your offer gets rebuffed and he mentions the donation venue you might educate him and see if this makes a friend, and a difference too.
