The continuum continues its onslaught on my SiS...

...Well, frustration continues.
I figured out how to replace A/C hoses, AND IT WORKS! I made 3-4 slits on the Aluminum crimped hose retainer, from the hose to about 4mm from the end of the retainer. I used a Dremmel with a 1/32 inch cutter (1/64 is too thin.) I then used a screw driver at the crotch of each cut and spread them open. Some muscular but carefull twisting and pulling freeed either end of the hose. My local refrigerator recharge place had hose. I bought about 3 feet and forced the hose all the way onto either end. I then used 2 hose clamps on either side to tighten over the cut retainers. NO LEAKS!!! I thought I was home free.
I pulled suction for 15 minutes, and then refilled with R134a via low side to a pressure of about 40 PSI. Maybe I shoulda' added oil prior to recharge rather than just having oil in the R134a.
Now the problem. The air blew cool, not cold, and then, out of no where, the unit started making a popcorn sound at irregular intervals. This was not the clutch, as the clutch remained engaged at all times. Then the car started also making smelly smoke. The smoke disipated after turning the car off and then back on. It oly slightly recurs if I gun the gas and then let off (which I think is pretty normal).
So; 1) What is this irregular popcorn popping sound?; 2) Why cool, not cold? 3) What was this episode of whitish smelly smoke (can't be head gasket as my head gasket is new and the smoke is gone)?
