Overpressurizing 134a will cause the lowered temps because of how hot the entire system becomes. That popcorny sound could be from something too hot, perhaps any remaining atmospheric moisture in the system boiling. The smoke is a giveaway from something too hot as well. Could be the hoses melting, or oil on the surface of a new hose near a connection thats very hot. I fear for your o-rings as well. I've read that 35 psi is about as high as you wanna go on the low pressure side. I fill mine to 33psi. I get plenty of cool in the hottest outdoor temps (100F). You can also buy those refrigerant recharge cans that include a few ounces of oil. You'd of course have to purge your system of the same amount of existing refrigerant before installing.
