There's a lot of tricky business going on out there with gas stations now that gas prices are so high; a few months ago I filled up my '93 convertible with 18 gallons at one station (the exact capacity of my tank). Only problem was, my needle was just getting to empty, which means there were probably at least 2 or 3 gallons still in the tank. At that time, prices were something like $3.19 in the NYC area - and I ended up paying almost $60. Which was weird, because filling up at other stations in the area at the same price yielded several fewer gallons and a $50 tab. Hmmmm.....
So I complained to the local consumer affairs/weights and measures folks, and they sent me a generic letter saying they had 'looked into the matter and found no discrepancies'. The fishy thing was, I got their response just a couple days after filing the complaint - so of course they didn't look into the matter, and just blew me off with a quick form letter.
There's a lot of money to be made when consumers finally get over that sticker shock and just accept that they have to pay a lot more for gas, and obviously when the gas stations and local government are greasing each others' wheels, it makes it even easier! The only thing you can do is shop around for gas stations, just like everything else.
