It is a son of a B job for sure, you are lucky its not december.
Yes, its under the ducting, and the only way to get it out is to bend it like you are going to break it,....after you unscrew the one screw holding it to the downpipe vent/duct.
Then, the screw is under the asbestos looking stuff, not too bad, but I had to drill mine out.
IMPORTANT:
I replaced mine with a bolt and nut with washers so that IF i ever have to do this job again, I can access this bolt from the bottom (although I probably won't ever have to do this again)...
I had to drill mine out...RUSt of New England.

ALSO:
Waste an entire can of LYSOL on the pads under the carpet....after the pads are dry (if they are wet) ...the entire can...you will probably never have to rip it apart again, so kill the smells now.

AND I sprayed the floorboard with an anti-rust protectant at the same time.
