A few ideas ... Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: '87 900T starts but won't keep running, dies -- long, scott47 ![]() |
Is the spark you get a good fat blue one? If so, the ignition system is probably OK.
Your ECU in the '89T is totally different than the one in your '87. the '89 has an LH 2.4 and the connector is totally different. And it's a good thing, because the pin order would probably be totally different and burn things out if they used the same 25-pin connector.
What happens when you disconnect the AMM and try to start it? If the AMM has a major fault, it should run better with it disconnected. Do you know anybody with a 16 valve non-turbo up to '87 or a turbo up to '88? See if they're generous and understanding enough to let you swap their AMM into your car as a test. DO NOT use any AMM that has a number stamped into the cover that ends with something other than 005 - you can damage either the ECU or the AMM because the AMM pinouts are different. One from non-turbo '88 or later or a Turbo '89 or later will not work for you.
What's the resistance between the button and the end of the rotor? It should be 1000 ohms.
What's the voltage at the fuel pump when you crank it? (You'll want a helper for this test, of course :-)
Your symptoms sound a lot like what I experienced with my '88 900S a few years ago. Without any warning, it would only run at large throttle openings, if at all. In that case, replacing the fuel filter took care of the problem. Evidently it had clogged enough that the fuel pump couldn't get enough fuel past it.
