Why keep an old car in the best shape possible? Because you can - not only successfully, but economically too. A new Civic will cost you $15,000 just to get your foot in the door, and that does not include a guarantee it won't have issues down the road and cost you more money. An old Saab costs substantially less to get into, and won't necessarily cost any more to maintain than the Civic. Additionally, in terms of functionality, I think it would be hard to demonstrate that a new Civic does anything that much better than a c900 - it's not bigger, faster, or safer, and with a $15,000 price tag, probably not more economical over the short term - and maybe not over the long term, either.
A 16 year old CD player will be less reliable than a modern CD player, and will cost more than a modern CD player to fix. It won't seek tracks as quickly, or eject CDs as reliably, or resist skipping as well as, or produce better sound quality than a modern CD player. It won't have as many features, it won't play as many formats.
There are a lot of things in life worth saving for many different reasons, but my argument is that old electronics that weren't that great to begin with aren't among them.
That's my point... YMMV...
