It may not be the rack. That symptom is caused by a gummed-up universal joint in the steering column. Just in front of the firewall (engine bay) there is a u-joint in the steering column. clean it up and regrease it and most likely your clunky steering will go away.
Steering racks on these cars don't usually fail unless you have a torn boot and some crud got in there. As far as leaks go, they are usually at hose connections, an easy fix.
