Jan,
It's a conventional differential. It splits the (engine) torque in response to resistance where the tire meets the road. The wheel with the least rolling resistance gets the most torque, up to 100% if its' resistance is nil. The early (<'88) C900s had the handbrake at the front wheels so you could slowly apply it to create artificial, balanced (L-R) rolling resistance and escape situations like you are describing. It's the poor mans' limited slip dif. Then in '88 they had to go and put the handbrake at the rear. I think that limited slip differential units are (were) available to fit the C900 but big money. Anyway, even without limited slip these are still very sure footed Winter cars. Even my old V4 Saabs were more reliable than most cars in the Winter. Cheers.
