Searching for 5-speed transmission (long)

Hi all. I am beginning a search for a 5-speed transmission for an auto to manual conversion. Just bought a very nice condition 87 Turbo Conv / automatic (175k) a few months ago. I either forgot or did not heed the advice of the majority of the members here to shy away from an automatic and am now facing a failing transmission.
I have read the document on this site on how to do the conversion and I am pretty sure I can handle it. My problem is that I live in central Nebraska a there are very few Saabs of any kind out here, let alone salvage yard 900’s to pull parts from. Most of the parts cars in the Saabnet classified are to far away to be practical to buy. So I need some advice on where to find a decent used or rebuilt 5-speed and the other parts needed.
Also, the Hollander parts search that most salvage yards use lists about 7 different transmission part numbers that I assume will fit. Are any of the part numbers or model year transmissions better than others? I have heard that the ring and pinion bearings are tougher in the later models, but I am not sure which years.
And, would it be better to gamble on a salvaged trans or maybe have one rebuilt? Not sure of the cost of either yet.
Any tips on this conversion from those who have done it would be appreciated….thanks
