change rack boot - damage?

discovered a torn right side boot on the steering rack on my 85 900S notchback when I was changing the outer tie rod end. How much damage, and how quickly, can I get from this boot? It's split in two pieces, so not much has been covered, and I don't know how long it's been like this, but I did change the brake caliper not too long ago this summer.
Does the inner tie rod just screw on all the way? Or is there adjustment there too?
thanks -
