I hadn't thought about it before, but it makes sense that, when the wear is occuring near the turbo's oil drain port, a small portion of it may have made its way back to the sump.
My other thought on it is that the oil flow flushed the bulk of the metal out past the worn seals out to the exhaust stream and the intake stream. It's been a while since I thought about what's happening behind a centrifugal impeller, but my hazy memory seems to indicate that there's a high pressure area behind it (next to the seal). So, when there's high boost, the pressure is probably forcing oil towards the exhaust side of the turbo. And when it's idling, there's probably an equal-opportunity dribble of oil to each side of the bearing - you get turbo oil burning in the turbo and in the engine.
That's kind of a moot point because, when it gets that bad, its time for a new turbo cartridge, anyway.
Westcountry, there's always going to be some oil in the intake ductwork. If you look in the plastic duct between the AMM and the turbo, you'll see a slick of oil that fans out from the PCV barb towards the turbo. The PCV picks up a mist of oil from under the valve cover and transports it to the turbo intake duct.
