This is an interesting story. For a good while, I suspected I had a bad head gasket. Every morning when I started the car up, I would get a huge cloud of lingering white smoke that would follow me for the first mile or so. It woul eventually clear up, and the engine would run good. Eventually however, the engine started having problems idiling, and would stall out when cold, and when the AC was on, or the electrical system was loaded. I was having to keep adding coolant to the car every so often, and I couldn't find a leak no matter how hard I looked. The odd thing however was going a compression check gave perfect results, leaving me really wondering what the heck is going on.
Well, I was down at Cape Hatteras over the summer, and I found the problem quite unexpectedly. The small heater hose just beside the distributor blew out and I had to install a replacement at a local auto parts shop. Apparently, before it completely blew out, this hose had been seeping water when the conditions were right, and it was shooting the coolant over towards the air intake. Then engine was drawing this coolant in, and burning it off making the appearance of a bad head gasket. Well, with the hose repaired (and all the others too), there's no more white smoke, and the cooling system hasn't lost a drop since, but the poor running conditions still persists....The car sort of acts like there's a vacuum leak, only, there's no vacuum leak.
Could the mass air sensor get damaged by having ingested cooling water? I'm quite suprised if it stayed as a liquid through the air filter, turbo, intercooler, and through all the plumbing. The thing is it's following classic symptoms I remember American cars like Camaro's doing when their MAF goes bad.
