Re-read your original post. Ah, I see. If you'd like it to work when driver door is open, possibly if you take the switch out you can scrape the points that make contact. I think it's a totally open switch on the back side. Makes it easy to clean contact surfaces but it's also the reason they go bad, open to the atmosphere and corrosion. On some makes, say VW, these things were notoriously touchy, Saab uses about the same switch. Also maybe a little light oil on the button shaft, then wipe excess off, so it pops out with the full strength of the puny spring, helping it make betteer contact.
Also look for and clean up any corrosion on the push-on terminal. Don't drop the wire down inside the door post.
