the other thing to remember is that they got that way because of the fluid going in/around them. that's your coolant that goes into the rest of the engine too. It's telling you to change the entire coolant, and never use tap water - only distilled. It's a pain in the ass, but it's the catalyst that is causing what you are seeing.
I purchase straight antifreeze and straight distilled water for use at the home front, it costs about half of the 50/50 stuff. I *also* purchase the 50/50 mix to carry in the car just in case, I put a new sealed 1gallon in the trunk kit, sealed makes it hard to leak! You can never be over prepared, as long as you can still get in the car to drive away! ha ha ha!
