Whitesaab,
To inspect the reverse idler and it's shift mechanism you'll remove the cover on the passenger side of the tranny where the tranny oil dipstick is located. You should have a new gasket on hand (available for a few bucks from various site sponsors). Just unscrew the 10 bolts with 12 mm heads and watch that the small coil spring for the poppet ball doesn't fall out and get lost. It's in a bore in the case at the upper, rear edge, it's tension is relieved as you remove the bolts so it won't fly out. You shouldn't need to drain the oil before removing the cover. This is all below the exhaust manifold so you may need a mirror and light. Get a small steel plate with a hole in it and secure it with one of the bolts so that it compresses the coil spring then put the car in first gear (engine off). Reach into the tranny and see if you can slip the reverse idler back so that it engages the reverse mainshaft gear. If you think that it has engaged then have someone hold the clutch in and see if the car will roll. If 1st and reverse are both engaged she won't roll. If that test gives no results, shift the car into reverse then, as someone in the car shifts to 1st, put your finger on the idler and see if it fully disengages (slides forward). If a free-roaming idler is the problem there's probably a defect in the steel lever that is secured by the 6 mm bolt (10 mm head) which actuates the idler, thus and easy fix. I guess it's barely possible that you have a primary chain system problem and that's also an easy inspection in the car but I've never seen that cause the symptoms you've got. Get a look at a 5 speed on someone's bench to familiarize yourself with the organs in question or find a picture in a manual. This should all be about a 30 minute process for a good Saab indy who knows C900s.
