Scanwest often buys dead/dying c900s for a few hundred dollars. Like the rest, your sister's (potential) car most likely needed a transmission, and probably other stuff, too (bushings, boots, brakes, seals, etc.). To rebuild the transmission and fix all the other stuff, for your sister, paying retail, $3000 is completely reasonable. (I've had them do a couple re-builds.) Cost for them? Close to nothing if they use used parts, but still cheap with new parts (wholesale), and labor is free, of course. (I don't know if you know, but the entire engine must come out for a 'box re-build, hence the cost. Well, plus Seattle's not a cheap place for service of any kind.)

I've known Rob, Craig, Doug, and nearly everyone else there for a long time. Are they perfect? Of course not; who is? Are they honest? I've not once seen anything to make me think otherwise.

From my perspective, they didn't "scare" your sister out of the car she brought them for an inspection so they could re-sell it (I'm pretty sure they don't have a secretary, though maybe the bookkeeper crashed her c900??); they saved her from buying a very expensive headache, then re-habbed it like any other shop would do. They could have easily told her the car was great, then tried to sell her that $3K re-build a couple months later when the tranny died.

Regards,

-Hans

PS I've not heard of any European or Canadian 1986 900 that would have special value in the U.S. Maybe it was a 5-door hatch, but that's not all that special. A c900 with a bad transmission is a c900 with a bad transmission. :-)
