Hey BobH-
I wanted to give you an update on my problem and thank you for all of your help. So after finding that only 11.8 volts was getting to the starter, and there was a drop of ~3 volts over the alternator/starter cable, i replaced that cable. But still nothing improved. Then after a bit more investigation, I found that the GROUND connection on the block was loose. I think the bolt must have loosened over a couple of days of driving, that is why it everything worked ok in after I replaced the alternator, and the problems didnt start till after that. Unfortunately, I really couldn't get to the bolt to tighten it (it is kinda stuck under the alternator. so what i did instead is just run a new ground wire off the alternator to the body of the car. Everything is working fine now.
Thanks again for all of your help. You were really great talking a novice through all of the steps. You helped save me a bunch of money I don't have right now, and made me look like a superstar mechanic to my fiance!
THanks!
