IMHO...it's the best car Saab ever made. It's no BMW...but the underlying quality and vision is there. The 99 was a superb car from about 73 when they redid the Triumph motor properly themselves...if ONLY they'd put in a 5 speed into the 99 earlier and made a lock-up available on the torque converter for the autos in the 900. In 77 & 78 the Blomqvist 99 Turbo rally cars were unbeatable....and then came Audi with quattro and the game was over. Saab 'peaked' in the early 80s with the 16 valve turbo. The 9000 was inmpressive...BUT didn't ever feel like a Saab to me....the company was too small to really invest in new cars....and the $:Kronnor exchange rate killed the company in the early 1990s. Getting bought by GM was a disaster for Saab albeit it kept them in business when otherwise they may have gone altogether...but now we have Badge Engineered cars just like British Leyland in the 1970s....no wonder GM is on it's knees!!!
BMW have avoided this fate by being larger to begin with and building consistently great product!!! Would never buy one though...always seem to be driven by hooligans!!!
