Good chance that you won't have to remove the shifter assembly.
From the way you describe what you have already done, it sounds like you have already gotten the plastic console cover off.
Undo the three torx screws that hold the shifter into the assembly and pull the shifter out. That should allow the reverse lockout to return to its normal position. While you have the shifter out, turn the key to see if it goes into position.
If the key doesn't go to it's Lock position, it's possible that the gearset skipped a tooth when it was forced. If that's the case, you will have to deal with removing the three-cornered nuts. I've had success with using a hammer and a slotted screwdriver to get the nuts loosened.
One caveat: If you have to go as far as flipping the shifter assembly over to disassemble it, loosen the pinch bolt that connects the shift shaft to the stub shaft that comes out of the transmission. That will let the shift shaft and shifter assembly rotate freely and you won't run the risk of damaging the rubber shifter coupling.
