Synthetic is good stuff....but I had an '85 SPG with 250K on it when I was 19 &I changed over to Mobil 1 10W30, and the engine developed a few oil leaks, another SPG I had did the same thing, thats a risk you take when putting it in your old C900 engine, while it's exceptionally good oil, it can break up sludge deposits in &around seals, causing oil leaks, sometimes bad ones.
In my current daily driver ('86 SPG) I am using Valvoline Maxlife 10W30 &a Saab filter, changed every 3K religiously, most of the time, a few hundred miles sooner. I don't have any oil leaks, the old engine doesn't burn it off (oil is still at max on dip stick when I change it), so I'm happy with it.
I have used Castrol GTX in the past as well &thats a very good oil.
I think the most important factor is keeping up on changes, I know people who use Mobil 1 oil, and change it at 5 to 7K miles, if your draining your expensive Mobil 1 out at 3K, some would say your wasting your $$$.
My Indy uses conventional motor oil on C900's at his shop when doing oil changes.
I have no complaints with conventional motor oil.
