Penzoil 10W-30
Used it in various cars over many years and can't say there is any problems. However, it is important to note that most cars meet the crusher not due to internal engine failure, but to various components (carbeurator, injection, transmission) and everyone's favourite - crashes.
I have owned many, many cars over the years that ranged from $100 (no, I'm not that old, it was a junker) to a new Saturn. I never had an issue with rings, valves (including seats and guides), bearings, etc.
People become frustrated after years of apparently expensive repairs and decide that a new car is better for them. That's why we can buy $40,000 cars from the 80-90's for a steal and repair them ourselves.
Also remember that there is a standard for motor oils that roughly dictates that one oil is like the other if it meets that mark. The rest of the price is found in your super bowl adverts and Nascar sposorships.
Finally, remember that the 3,000 mile change intervals are something that the oil companies encourage. It's in the companies best interest to have you change the oil as much as possible. The Quicky Lubes also have a hand in this.
Often modern cars have oil viscosity sensors that tell you when the oil should be changed. I think my Saturn worked out to be something like 8,000 miles. The factory manuals predicted 7,000 or so (but that's from memory.)
And one last cool thing is that some companies actually recycle motor oil. It's refined again from the older stuff. Even old oil is cleaner than the stuff they pull out of the ground now adays. It takes less processing to ready it for consumption. Mercedes uses it in their cars when they leave the factory. If it's good enough for them, I feel confident that it's good enough for me. Unfortunately the stuff is hard to find here. It's pretty easy to do in Europe though.
