Yes, I have a 1990 vert and did it. Loosen the nut that allows the length of the shaft on the U-joint assembly to be adjusted (shoot it with some WD-40 to get everything moving. Then, working from inside, move the gasket out of the way, shoot the bolt and spline with WD-40 and completely remove the bolt. You may want to do this a day a head or so, so that the WD-40 can soak in before loosening the bolts. Leave the upper U-joint tinght at the steering column.
Then get under the car and use a 1 foot long cold chisel or steel rod to gently drive the u-joint upward and off the splines (catching the business end of the rod or shisel just under the "shoulder" of the U-joint). I used a nice little 2-pound sledge that is one of my favorite tools (the old "Russian Persuader."
Best of luck.
