I am reasonably certain that no European car ever had plastic headlights. I could be wrong, but I've never seen such a thing. Plastic headlight lenses were unique to American cars AFAIK... and as a three-time Ford owner, I think they were blazing new trails in cheapness...
Like Oldsaab said, there were a couple people selling plastic covers for the e-code lights. For a long time, you could even buy them from the Saab Sport & Rally catalog. The genuine Saab parts covered the glass completely, including the corners, and were virtually impossible to detect.
