based on your questions, budget about 6-10 months for the engine overhaul and about 3,000 bucks in parts and machining.
a smarter quicker way is to locate a better younger engine and swap it in.

Your workspace should be clean but its you that will suffer if its unheated.
You can use old disc brake pads instead of the suspension spacers.
its easier to remove both drive axles when lifing the engine out. Not necessary but makes it a touch easier.
Special saab tools and some others: clutch spacer ring, 13 mm crows foot wrench, complete set of metric open ended wrenches, long and short sockets in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive, breaker bars and snipe bars, screwdrivers and torx driver sets including a T40 security bit for the distributor hold-down, 32 mm deep socket (buy a deep impact socket and get it over with) for crankshaft pulley and axle nuts, 2 small hydraulic jacks, 2x4's of short length, Permatex locktite, gasket maker and thread sealer, wheel chocks, brake and clutch bleeding kits, hoist, engine stand of some sort, access to a good machine shop that is not slow, mechanics vice mounted firmly on a large workbench in a well lit space, trouble lights for mobile lighting, large credit limit for on-line ordering of parts from site sponsors, many hours of research in the archives of the many and varied aspects of these cars and components, Bentley manual for 16v Saab cars (i should have put this at the top of the list!) and i could go on and on.
Get the hint? Dont jump into the pool unless you know how deep the water is.
