Thanks for the comments. It does seem very strange. The stuff was easy to see in the bottom of the drain pan. It dissipated into a number of black clumps that did not feel gritty and were easily spread between the fingers. My initial response was that coolant was getting in the oil but there was absolutley no sign of milky oil. Only these black clumps or "blobs" as I called them earlier.
And yes, the oil may have been below nomal operating temp. The engine ran for some time and the temp guage was up but the outside air was -15C.
I am going to try another oil change in a shorter interval to see if it happens again. My concern is that this is connected to a problem that I posted last July where I had valve lifter noise that would not go away. It went away with an oil change. So, an interesting one to trouble shoot.
