5 speed with all brass syncros

Pinion bearing failure directly follows molycoated black syncro failure/flaking. Sec gen 900 had little moly coated reverse syncros that did readily deteriorate/flake. Saab provided a brass reverse syncro, and an advisement to change "all transmission bearings" if reverse black ring flaking occurred. Saab warned direct bearing failure because of the littlest black particle damaging bearing surfaces. This information by Saab, is directly relational to 5 speed pinion bearing failure incidences. Pinion bearing dimension/part number were the same from 72 "king Kong" 4 speed, through 1988. 4 speed boxes did have wear and evidence of soft particle impressions showing in the races, but were technically serviceable and quiet. 1980's 5 speed introduced the black syncro ring on 2nd gear, and later by 81-82, 3rd gear got a black ring also. 83-91 were the peak years for pinion bearing damages. Saab warranty statistics also verify that more non turbo 5 speed had P/B failure than Non turbo "Plain Jane" models. This can be explained that serious and performance " in tune " drivers, fast and correctly shifted better than the housewife model/ nerdy professor type who bought the Jane models and scrammed the shift lever in twitchy, non caring fashion. Rebuilding a 5 speed with all brass style syncros has proved sucessful in near elimination of P/B failure.
