Durability for a black syncro ring is very high, and most do not flake apart , but some car did flake/wear thru to brass underlayment. At 100K most black sysncro rings do have wear and those worn away particles then not then "still on the ring" departed for circulation in the oil supply. Brass rings used on 1st and 4th are same as 2nd or 3rd cept for the coating. Ten 4 speed overhauls and two hundred fifty 5 speed overhauls and twenty five 9000/ sec gen 900 5 speeds have passed thu my hands and from these repairs over 25 years, I do opine this posting as facts. They are. Real world bassed. Lived , loved and lamented, year in and years out. The above post is for thoughtful consideration, No intention to worry anyone unecessarily, the choice of a friction space age coated syncro by saab was for increased 2nd gear syncro life was valid in long term, but the engineer's either then ( 1980) knew the slight risk to bearing surfaces by using black rings, or later unadvertantly substaniated this risk, when discussing the sec gen 900 little reverse sysncro/ bearing life issue. This tech review contains real truth, and , upscale models or their owners does not guaranty mechanical sensitive intelligent driving techniques. I will slander the mechanically insensitive always and anyway I see fit. Kind of like someone kicking a puppy, revving a cold motor. Where would you read, when preload is correct, shim pack for the gear stack is 1.0 mm +-.05. This is born out as real, yet, no one would set preload by how the stack "shims" in the case. How you mind catches the subtance of this post, its intentions, and length of the pinion "shaft" ( sic) , are interesting points to ponder. There is a 4 speed chain drive with only two chains in the primary, the middle row of teeth were not there. This version is not listed in the service manuals, yet it was in a 99 saab in 1978. I would not worry at all if my transmission in a car I drive ( some actually do) had a black syncro. Keep an open mind: in certain durability overhaul design targeting, an all brass trans would win out for ultimate longevity, if synthetic oil used and shifting was prudent and precise. Don..
