I wouldn't know about that fix; someone tried it on the previous transmission on my convertible for the previous owner and it got him another 20k but he killed the box anyway. My transmissions don't pop out of gear.
As for the shift rod coupling, you're going to have to replace it sooner or later, why not before you mash your synchronizers to pieces?
I replace the front mount every 100-120k.
New gearbox gasketry and fluid should run you around 35-50 dollars. I recommend getting the gaskets for the right front side cover (fifth gear), the dipstick cover (most didn't have dipsticks after 1991 but the covers remained) and the main inspection cover at the rear. At this time, I also get a gasket for the clutch shaft cover. This cover is just behind the radiator on the top front of the primary chain case. It's really tough- take a flat blade screwdriver, release the metal clip holding the cover on, replace the gasket, then snap it back into place.
While you're in there, give the internals a good visual inspection and reach in with your hand to see if there are any chunks lying in the bottom. Clean the magnet on the drain plug even if you don't remove it, and if it doesn't want to come out easily, don't force it or you may crack the housing!
My MTF lasts around 100k before it physically and chemically starts to break down. When this happens, the first thing I notice is sychronizer grinding when shifting into first and second gears; on my convertible it would downright block fifth too! I thought I needed a new gearbox, and that's why the previous owner sold me the car. A semi-reputable shop put the transmission in, but they never bothered to change the fluid. DUH!
Half an hour and three quarts of fluid later, and ever since the car shifts fine. No grinding up first or hesitating to shift into second (viscosity breakdown of the oil so the synchronizers can't do their job right) and no blocking fifth (same thing). That was the best eleven hundred bucks I ever saved.
AND you'll have a fresh set of gaskets on there, so chances are the fluid won't seep out either.
