Tricks to getting trim adhesive off?

Some prior owner re-adhered the rubber door trim piece on my car, not with the correct foam tape trim adhesive, but instead with that glue meant for local patches. They gobbed it on all over, even re-did it a few times from what it looks like. Now I've got the trim off and I'm trying to clean the glue off both surfaces to do it right.
Any tips on getting it off, especially off the painted door? Would a heat gun help? It's brittle and well-attached.
