Your engine speed is only half of the story. The majority of the rest is engine load, since with the manual you can be at a slow engine speed and still have the gas pedal all the way down. If you're crazy like I am, get a turbo gauge from a junkyard car and install it in your non-turbo. If all is well you'll never go into the boost range, but the vacuum part of the gauge gives you a direct reading of how much load the engine is experiencing.
I'm always surprised how my father's car (those other Swedes) seems to clear 3000 RPM every half mile or so. I guess when you've got 200 horsepower in a heavy box (in its defense it does a great job hauling cargo) you don't care about such things.
I like to believe that the green range on the tachometer was developed for 8 valve engines since 16 valves were only in testing when that tach came on the market. This doesn't apply for 1992-93 900s that got a different instrument graphic.
What kind of mileage are you getting? What year and model 900 do you have? I can give some more specific pointers after that.
