Doubt it's the alternator but could be.

Meghan, if you still haven't resolved this, while it's possible your no-start came on as a result of a non-charging charging system, i.e., maybe bad alternator-bad brushes-bad alternator ground-broken belts, if it did you'd have been getting some warning signs, lighted alternator light on dash, things dragging, car barely running. And if it WERE a bad alternator but battery still had enough charge in it to drive you to work and park car with no signs of bad running or sluggish starting, then battery probably would have still had something of a charge when you left work, and you report absolutely dead car.
So start with a jump, then look to see if anything is still on in the car that could have drained battery down - - was headlight switch in Park position instead of either on or off, for example. IS an interior light on? Is trunk light on - - on driver side side wall of trunk. If so, change switch position to put light out and end drain. Then see if battery charges back up from running the car.
If it's a fairly new battery and your dead spell was caused by leaving something on, just jumping it and running it a lot should re-charge it and you may not have any more problems.
Your friend seemed to have some good ideas - - he's probably got a handle on it by now.
Report back.
