Key/Ignition troubles...

Go to start up the car and the key twisted and gave, so I pulled it out, tried to bend it back in place and it fell apart in my hands.
This almost got me stranded over an hour from home tonight, but managed to wiggle the key and get it to work (still can't figure out how). got it started and drove home, phew!
When I got in, I grabbed the wife's key chain which has an original factory key, I had to fanagle it, but it would work. Don't know why this is acting up all of a sudden. I have noticed that my key was starting to get a twisted appearance.
I'll go and get a new one cut to the old factory key. Can't I give the VIN number to the dealer and have them cut me an exact one? this old key is pretty worn and I don't know how accurate it will be.
I've read about drinks and stuff getting spilled down there, I have not done this, I don't drink soft drinks, only coffee and water have been in the car and I am very careful not to spill anything there.
I've heard that you can pour hot water down there and ungum it. I wonder if rubbing alcohol would work too? Should I put some graphite powder down there? This really scared me tonight and want to try to help this without replacing this assembly. It just feels like it's not turning as easily and more force and jiggling is required.
Thanks in advance guys!
