Sorry but you are on your own with this one since you have modified it. I know very little about tuning and modification.
What I do know is that the cam shaft marks are always toward the intake side as the picture show.
But in your case, I wonder if the timing chain and guides are worn so much that you are almost a tooth off when having them set properly.
Only ones did I have an engine where the timing chain and guides were so worn that when lining up the sprockets, the marks were quite a bit off but when moving them up one step, they ended up on the exhaust side of the mark and I know that is wrong.
The cars WAS sluggish at the proper setting so I ended up moving the sprockets up a tooth advanced and the car ran better but a little bit rougher during acceleration.
So techinally, I tweaked the cam timing due to the worn chain.
But the proper repair should have been to replace the timing chain and guides instead.
