Transmission, '91 internals in '89 case?

Can anyone tell me, with certainty, whether the transmission main case is interchangeable '91 and '89? The deals is this. I'm ready to reassemble my '91 trannie w/ new pinion bearings, new reverse and some other stuff when I notice a crack in the case at the rear most bolt hole for the (driver side) driver. I suspect that cracking here is not uncommon because there's very little meat between the threads and the edge where the differential cover goes. I know where I can get an '89 main case. Any body know for sure whether the guts of a '91 will work in an '89 case?
