I've taken three apart (mostly intermittent ones) and fixed them myself. Each of them had the same problem which was not broken teeth from the gears. Basically, there's this metal gear on the shaft with the numbers which gets loose on the axle and spins without spinning the numbers. I took it off and squeezed the part that goes on the shaft with pliers and re-mounted it and it was fixed.
