IN MY EXPerience, the automatics prior to model year 1994 were bad. That's my experience. My '88 900 has been in the family for 120,000 miles. 60k were automatic years, getting 22 MPG and losing drag races to lawn tractors. 60k were 5-speed years, getting 30 MPG and losing drag races to cars (no more lawn and garden equipment) as long as it wasn't snowing. Honestly, I'd avoid it unless you have to drive one due to a physical impairment or if you have plans laid to convert it. If you show up to a test drive and the car is even slightly warm, turn around and walk away since the failure mode I've seen is not-engaging-any-gears-until-warm, which is how the box died on my car. Finding a 900 auto that is for sale that has had religious fluid replacements (changing the fluid every 30k and saying a prayer) using the right fluid (type F, not Dex-3) and with the right amount of non-degraded final drive oil (no dipstick, fill hole in side) where none of the fluids are leaking (final drive in the ATF, ATF in the coolant, et cetera) is pretty slim. I'd bet on a poker game before betting on that.
I know full well that the C900 ceased production in 1993. That's why I named that year.
