I'd be tempted to let that sleeping dog be...& just reinforce the recess as sloopjohnb recommended. Although, perhaps the busted bolt could be drilled out? I don't recall what kind of clearance there is under there - but try positioning a drill w/appropriate bit...just to see if it's possible. Assuming it is...from there, you can tap it for a new bolt or see if you can find a rubber plug designed for damaged oil pan drain threads.
The 87' 900t I rescued from the junk yard had one of these & boy was it difficult to remove! I had a hard time prying it out w/a BJ pickle fork & have no doubt it would safely hold back coolant system pressure.
The plug resembles a kinky sex toy (I guess...having never actually seen one before ;) only smaller. It's about 1.25 inches long w/a +-15mm wide shaft terminating into an +-18mm wide bulb. The base is about as wide as a transaxle oil drain plug & has a steel insert. I've no idea who makes it, but the following info is molded into the base: 4G 5/8 & also these patent #'s; USA 3307731 & 3604591, Canada 805988.
As an aside, the trans had apparently endured an impact w/a curb or something & the rear area of the eng. oil drain had been "repaired" w/some kind of funny looking speckled black epoxy (definatly not JB Weld). I cleaned up the epoxy repair w/my dremmel tool & carefully chased the threads w/a 14mm x 1.5 bolt I turned into a tap by cutting some vertical relief channels. A new OE size drain bolt is now in place & holding perfectly. I wish I knew what kind of epoxy was used...it seems sturdy.
