Stripped Bolts and Cracked Boots Posted by DietrichOS [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I went to do my brake pads today, and discovered the the passenger side rotor had a very nice lip on it. Got two new rotors, replaced passenger side rotor and pads first with no problem.
Then we stripped the little hex bolt that, along with the post to guide the wheel, holds the driver's side rotor on. Since that rotor was in pretty good shape, we just put new pads on and sewed it up. Time was also an issue.
Any advice for getting that little tiny stripped (really stripped) bolt out of there?
Also, I realized my outer CV boots are cracked on both sides. My amature mechanic and good friend said that one of her cars, an old Honda, had been like that for a while and she kept filling it up with grease. So we did that. But what is good enough for a Honda Del Sol is not good enough for my 1990 Turbo convertible.
The only hint that the boots were craked is that occasionally when making a u-turn or backing out of a parking place, I hear a nice clunk. Not the telltale clicking, just one clunk. I put a post up about it a while back and had people telling me it was the wheel bearing, which it may very well be.
I have been reading about split boots, pros and cons? Sounds cheap and easy to me, which may not be the right way to go.
Any sage advice is always appreciated. Un-sage advice also appreciated.
