5 speed lockup in reverse?

16 year old son limped home in the 84 900S, saying there was a bad smell and the shifting was acting funny. So I take it for a drive and sure enough, its tugging real hard like its pulling a heavy load. I suspect locked up caliper, and yep, one of the fronts is dragging. So I disassemble and clean the caliper, put it back on, wheel now spins freely and I can push the car easily by hand. But the original problem still persists. And when I put it in reverse to slowly back up, it rolls for a bit then completely locks up. I mean screeching tires, dead stop lock up. What the...! So I pulled the clutch to check its condition. I figure its smoked from dragging the locked caliper home. Clutch plate is worm down to minimun specs and I have on on the way. But now the locking up in reverse thing is puzzling me. Could the gearbox (5speed) be toast as well? Anyone else ever seen this reverse lockup condition? Not sure if there is any thing I can check without pulling the trans. Help me CMyles?
