Hi Jan,
Well you've got a tranny problem it seems. Does it lock up if you roll the car backwards in neutral? Your symptoms are most typical of blown pinion bearings or pinion housing (as others have said) but there is a SMALL chance that one reverse gear is missing some teeth and jamming (seen it happen). Now if it's the reverse mainshaft gear then you are skunked. However, If it's the idler gear then it could be fixed, unit in car (but it's a lot of work. How many miles are on this tranny?). Like I said, this is a long shot but it might be worth it to pop off the side cover and look at the reverse idler (all the way around), but only if it will roll backwards in neutral. If the car locks up when rolling backwards in neutral then that gearbox has to come out. I would ask whether the car was dropped into reverse at speed or whether it was noisy at speed before the problem occurred but sometimes no one can answer questions like that. Good luck.
