Usually coils work fine at start up but as they warm up the spark begins to break down. Since the cap was in such bad shape look for carbon tracking betwen the high & low tension wires on the coil. The symptoms you describe sound more like a dirty throttle body. Other possiblities are a partially clogged fuel filter or vacuum leak causing a lean condition. Pull the plugs, make certain they are the correct brand & heat range- they should be burning almost gray or lt. tan. Check gap too.
