The entire first year (1986) 900 convertible production run of 300 cars was delivered into North America.
All other counties got 1987 model year convertibles - with the revised slant-front look.
Of the 300 cars, 250 were automatic transmissioned - and 50 were manual transmissioned. All were silver metallic painted with a Buffalo Grey leather interior and a black cloth roof. The original 1986 Saab cloth roofs had black vinyl edging on them. Later models had cloth edges matching the color of the roof itself.
There was (1) solid-white convertible and (1) cherry red convertible made made as production prototypes. There were (2) pearl-colored design prototypes built prior to the solid-white and cherry red one. One design prototype was manufactured by ASC and was based on the 2-door notchback model. The second was made by engineers at Saab Trollhatten and was based on the hatchback.
The ASC concept was chosen and production was awarded to the Saab plant in Finland.
The cherry red production prototype is owned by the GM Heritage Collection. The whereabouts of the white production prototype is unknown.
Saab displayed the Pearl-colored design prototype at the Geneva Auto Show in 1983. Both Pearl design prototypes are owned by the Saab Factory Museum.
