Let me start by saying I did none of this work myself. But after talking to folks here and on chat, this is what I learned:
1. When the master starts to leak, the release point drops as you hold the pedal down: fluid is escaping back into the reservoir. No loss of fluid.
2. a leaking slave will cost you fluid. According to the mechanic that replaced mine, there was a puddle of fluid in the bellhousing or whatever he called it.
3. A neat way to bleed the clutch is one I learned here. Connect the front caliper bleeder to the slave bleeder with a tube, open both and slowly push the brake pedal to reverse-bleed the clutch system. Ingenious.
A new master, slave and clutch really made a difference.
