Timing chain pad

I have an annoying growl coming from the front of my car. I replaced the entire exhaust system in an effort to get rid of it. No luck. Now I am pretty sure it is emenating from the timing chain. My Indy says the only way to access the chain tensioner and pad is to yank the engine. Is this true? I know it is at the rear of the engine and access is tough, but is this a stand on your head job? or something I can do under a shade tree?
