getting worried now... long

had some earlier posts on this with some advice from Cmyles, but i'm starting to fear the worst.
quick recapp: 89 turbo 4-door, 95,000 miles, great body and paint, no rust, great leather, sat for two years without being driven, i picked it up for $1,500.00 (after i lost out on the bidding for that beryl green spg on (e)bay). it has maintenance records that show a rebuilt tranny being put in less than 5,000 miles ago. since it didn't start when i bought it (it needed a new ECU), i obviously didn't get a chance to drive it, but the low miles, great condition, and receipts for tranny work all seemed to add up to a no-brainer. well...now that i have it running, i'm starting to wonder. it slips out of third, mostly during acceleration and when going up hills but at other times as well. it also has the rather common problem of slipping out of reverse.
i have checked: engine mounts - visual inspection seems fine, shift linkage - looks smooth and solid, is there ANYTHING else that could be causing this aside from internal tranny problems? am i going to have to pull the transmission?
please give me some hope to cling to, even if its false hope.
