If this were my project, I would have the transmission drained by taking off the diff cover. Monitor what comes out, and study any pieces that are in the oil. There is a magnet inside the diff cover - check that too. When you refill, use a good product like MTL or something better than straight motor oil. I think CMyles would agree with that.
If pieces come out that need to be analyzed, then I am sure one of the experts on the board would be glad to take a look at the leftovers.
I like the idea of the spring detent and ball mod. I would double check that the shift coupling is solid and that it is adjusted properly like what is in Bentleys -- there is a pin that is inserted in the shifter to lock in third, and then clamp the coupler in place. Maybe that is off allowing the rebound of the gear. Hope that makes sense.
